”Under the roof. Four stages of intimacy” gather the graphics work of over 30 artists from the collection of the Art Center Dos de Mayo. Curated by INGRÁFICA, International Contemporary Art Print Festival, the exhibition seeks the singularity in the language of different authors working around a common topic. Regardless of the time or techniques adopted by each artist, “Under roof. Four stages of intimacy” explores through graphic work double conceptual dimension of space, physical and mental.
The areas selected to exhibit the sample are structured according to an intimate exhibition concept and recognition, which naturally accommodates all these works under one physical roof. The roof space consists of the spiritual of a roof, an ideal space that covers both the immediate environment surrounding the artist’s actions or who serves his experimentation, and the mental place where it becomes real through the works.
Each of these spaces is generated by varying the level of intimacy. Thus, one can travel from the physical plane, in relation to the body, to private and domestic, interpersonal and society or the material / institutional as economics or culture, always based on notions of being interdependent. Each degree of intimacy gives us a position in the world by creating a barrier that distinguishes us from others, protecting the individual from the outside. The privacy may represent disengagement in respect to the others, but also defined by the recognition of others (the public). Describes a potential that allows the creation of shared realities that do not belong to one or the other. Intimacy, therefore, is a practice whose meaning is linked to a variable spatial order invoked by the user context and language.
Following this line of exploration ,“Under roof. Four Stages of intimacy ” is organized around four distinct private moments:
Within the silence focuses on issues that alienate the individual from his environment (loneliness, fears, frustrations). It begins with the rotund “ man of the lamp” Bernardi Roig, and includes, among others, bucolic landscapes and deserts of Juan Pablo Villalpando, blind repetition from Juan Moro with “ 125 bombs on nothing” , or “ imagined Projects not forgotten” series by Mónica Sotos.
The second, desires, fantasies , outlines the essential desires that develop in the strictest privacy and is contained in the Freudian subconscious. This section fades from the musical performances of “ Jazz Trinity “triptych by José Manuel Broto, sexual or David Israel with his work “ Temptation III” until the hallucinations of Martin Chirino and his work poetic tool useless , or at Puente Juan Ugalde.
My map of the world talks about the idea of associating some physical or mental places, with community integration and belonging to a territory. The “physical” is reflected in works such as Ivan Larra Continent II, and the “mental” exemplified by the work of, among others, Josechu Davila. The two pieces of Martha Cardenas, “ Behind the blue stain glass window”, complete the symbolic circle.
The fourth stage the book is the place is a selection of books and binders consisting of prints of various artists. They show the intimate relationship between printmaking and letters, as shown in “ Witch” Javier Pagola / Julio Cortazar. These publications also show the creative freedom and formats seen in “the book is the place of L’study” or the “ world of rhythm” by Carlos Pazos / Eduardo Mendoza, and books that make a tool that connects the artist’s message with the private space of the viewer / reader.
